What To Expect

Regardless of which of our practitioners you see, your initial appointment will run approximately 60 minutes and include a full health history, relevant physical exams, and an initial treatment plan.

If it is your first time at Renfrew Chiropractic & Rehabilitation Centre, please arrive 15 minutes early to complete the paperwork for your appointment.

Visiting a chiropractor, or physiotherapist is much like visiting any medical doctor. Your first visit will require a few extra steps to ensure we treat you effectively and safely. Here’s what you can expect:

A full medical history:

Be prepared to answer questions about:

  • Prior and existing medical conditions
  • Relevant family medical history
  • Past and current treatments
  • The names and contact information of your current doctors

Your practitioner will also review the reasion why you are seeking aid. They will want to know:

  • How often are you in pain?
  • Where does it hurt?
  • How bad the pain is on a scale of 0 to 10?

A physical examination of the injured area:

After going over your medical history and quizzing you about your pain, your practitioner will conduct a physical examination. This will help determine the problem and come up with a solution. We may look at:

  • Muscle tone
  • Range of motion of the problematic area
  • Joint mobility
  • Muscle strength and the integrity of the nerves in that location

Be prepared to move around as necessary for the practitioner to get a sense of your bodily movements. It's a good idea to wear loose clothing to all your RCRC appointments!

Additional testing:

In order to come up with the right solution for your injury, your practitioner may have you undergo a series of tests. These can include:

  • X-rays
  • MRIs
  • CAT scans
  • Blood tests

You do not need to wear anything special for your first appointment. If you have scheduled an acupuncture appointment, it is best that you wear loose-fitting clothing.

During your first visit, please be prepared to answer questions about the following:

  • Prior and existing medical conditions
  • Current medications and natural health products
  • The names and contact information of your current health care providers
  • Your family health history

If you are able, please bring the following to your first appointment:

  • Copies of blood work or imaging that relate to your current concerns
  • A bag with your current medications and natural health products

Your initial treatment plan may include ordering some lab work. If this is the case, Dr. Helferty will discuss the cost of testing with you (not included in the appointment fee) and provide you with the necessary requisition(s). A few examples of tests that Dr. Helferty orders include:

  • IgG food sensitivity testing
  • Comprehensive stool analysis
  • Regular blood work (e.g. cholesterol, vitamins, blood sugar, liver function)
  • Hormone testing (blood, saliva, urine)
  • Heavy metal testing

Your treatment plan will depend on your concerns, your preferences, the treatments you are already receiving (from other health care providers), and what you feel is doable. The way that Dr. Helferty treats include:

  • Diet and lifestyle recommendations
  • Supplementation
  • Herbal medicine
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture
  • Dry needling
  • Bio-identical hormones
